Geo - The new web3 browser with a decentralization mission
At Graph Day - June/2/2022, the Co-founder of The Graph Yaniv Tal released a new web3 browser called Geo to overcome all the challenges we currently have with web2 browsers. A browser with a decentralization mission, based on voting, and powered by The Graph.
Part of this article is from Yaniv’s keynote at Graph Day. He is a true visionary and I really recommend watching it here.
A browser is basically a way to access the World Wide Web. But why Geo? What are the current problems with our browsers? And how to start using Geo? That is what we are going to cover in this article.
The problem
There is a misconception about how our internet works, many people think it is totally free to use Google, Facebook, or any other web2 platform. But the dark reality is that they are selling your personal data, calendar, messages, and everything else. That is how Google is valued at> $1 trillion and how it made $75.33 billion in the fourth courter of 2021 alone as revenue. Source
You have to deal with trackers, ads, and pop-ups, and if you ask yourself, “why am I seeing this?” the answer is always because the corporate wants you to.
How should we organize data in the knowledge age?
The answer is protocols. Protocols are a new organizational structure, they allow you to build internet native institutions that are open, transparent, and fair. We can have protocols for every single mission.
With protocols, we can use fees for products and services, such as query fees in The Graph and transaction fees with Blockchains. Then we can use the rewards to administrate public goods, such as indexer rewards with The Graph and block rewards with Blockchains. Because we have programmable money, we can build much more sophisticated mechanisms to design the incentives we want.
There is also protocol governance which helps us to set public policy with real-time voting systems that are cryptographically secure.
We can create a civilization to improve the quality of life for every person on earth and that is the idea behind Geo.
What is Geo✨
Geo is a web3 decentralized browser built on The Graph.
In Geo, the pages are open and curated by the community. So you can vote on what is valuable and your vote counts.
Geo is solving all the problems we currently have with our web2 browsers and it is opening a new window of innovation, a new internet where your privacy is the top priority.
With Geo, you do not have to know anything about crypto or blockchain to be able to use it. This is an experience to onboard the next 1B users to web3.
When can you use Geo?
Geo is in beta and it is only supporting iPad and Mac devices at the moment, signup for the beta waitlist here.
$5 vs your personal data
Geo costs $5/month while using centralized web2 browsers costs you your own personal data. The choice is yours. You are either the customer or the product.
In conclusion, “we are rebranding Google as The Graph of web2.”
That’s all for today!
